Performance Enhancing Adjustments

Athletes of all ages are looking for an advantage in their sport. We have all seen news stories of athletes getting caught cheating or taking performance enhancing drugs. They want to win at all costs. Of course, there is an underlying psychological issue here that is not the scope of this blog. 

If you or your young athlete are looking to improve performance, then you should look to chiropractic care! If you have spent any time around my office, then you know the focus of chiropractic care is to restore and improve the function of the nervous system. Dorland's Medical Text states "An intact nervous system will lead to optimum functioning of the human body." Simply put, if your nervous system is functioning optimally, then you are not at your best. And that goes not only for young athletes but also for adults in the workforce.  

Many studies through the years have shown the positive effects of chiropractic adjustments on athletic performance. One such study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in May, 2000 showed a "marked improvement" of reaction times in the group who received adjustments vs the control group. I don't know about you, but a marked improvement in reaction time sounds like a good thing come game time!

Of course, chiropractic adjustments also improve joint mechanics. Flexibility and stability are typical goals of chiropractic care. Most chiropractors focus on posture as well. In the American Journal of Pain Management, J. Lennon says, "Posture and normal physiology are interrelated." Later the same article states, "Posture affects and moderates every physiological function from breathing to hormone production." Also of note is a condition known as Forward Head Posture. FHP can result in up to 30% of vital lung capacity. 

So, with this information in mind, do you think breathing efficiently during game time is important? Of course it is! Chiropractic care helps improve posture which in turn helps breathing! How cool is that?!?!
