Types of Migraines

The American Migraine Foundation estimates that 36 million people in America suffer from migraines. Migraines are the name given to a host of neurological conditions coupled with head pain. Dr. Ed and our team at Total Body Healthcare in Hermitage would like to look at some of the types of migraines.

Common Migraine

Also called migraine without aura, this is (as the name suggests) the most common type of migraine you can have. You have head pain, nausea, vomiting, and become extremely sensitive to light, sound, and smells. You may also have other symptoms unique to you, such as an increasing sense of panic.

Classic Migraine

This is also called a migraine with aura. This is like a common migraine, only a short time before the symptoms begin, you see a mild visual hallucination like a series of flashes, halos around lights, or appearing as if you are underwater. This is called an aura.

Hemiplegic Migraine

You get the symptoms of a classic or common migraine, but one side of your body becomes weak.

Familial Hemiplegic Migraine

This is a kind of hemiplegic migraine that runs in families.

Vestibular Migraine

This is a common or classic migraine with incredible dizziness or vertigo.

Menstrual Migraine

This migraine is caused by a surge in hormones just before or during your period.

Chronic Migraine

This is when you suffer from any type of migraine for more than 14 days out of the month.
